Speaking of critters …

Saturday saw the groundbreaking for the first phase of the new, larger Helen Woodward Animal Center. In advance of ceremonial shoveling, veteran board member and builder Togo Hazard’s two Shih Tzus, wearing construction helmets, “pawed” the first dirt. One is named, appropriately, Dusty. Then board members joined center chief Mike Arms with traditional “gold” shovels.

Actress Kristen Bell of “Veronica Mars” fame received the center’s 2009 Humane Award.
